Talkative Tuesday πŸ€“ ➡️ ~ Epic The Musical

This blog post has been delayed for several weeks, and honestly, I should have written it long ago. But here it is, finally—because EPIC The Musical deserves nothing less than the spotlight. I’m not just considering ranking it at the top of my list of best musicals. No, it actually is number one, wearing the blue ribbon proudly. The way it blends storytelling and music is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, and that’s why it earns my highest praise.

Long before I even knew EPIC existed, back when I was still a kid, I used to daydream about what the world would be like if people could naturally break into song and synchronize with each other, just like they do in movies. In my imagination, there were melodies tied to every emotion—joy having its own natural tune, sadness resonating at another pitch, even abstract ideas like hope or courage vibrating with unique frequencies. People themselves would have instruments and melodic lines that reflected who they were, and the whole world would essentially be a giant, living orchestra.

That’s exactly what EPIC The Musical reminded me of, and in some ways, brought to life. The creators didn’t just write music to accompany the story; they made the music part of the story itself. Through its recurring motifs, every emotion in the narrative has its own theme. Each character is given a distinct musical identity, and when their stories intertwine, so do their melodies. It’s as though the music breathes right alongside the actors, shaping moments of triumph, grief, and love with an emotional weight words alone could never capture.

What truly blew me away is how meticulously they use motifs and instruments to represent specific characters, ideas, and emotions—even thoughts. Sometimes these motifs are woven into the background so subtly you don’t notice them at first, but they’re there, carrying meaning. The layers of detail are insane. Hidden clues are tucked into the harmonies, rhythms, and reprises, making the music itself a puzzle to decode. You can enjoy EPIC casually, but if you sit down and really study it, you’ll realize the storytelling goes far beyond what the lyrics say. It’s like peeling back the curtain on an entirely new dimension of the narrative.

And the best part? The journey doesn’t end here. The writer of EPIC The Musical is already working on another musical called Ilium, and I honestly can’t wait to experience it. If EPIC showed what’s possible when motifs and storytelling fuse together, I can only imagine how breathtaking Ilium will be. And on top of that, there’s still ann Authorial Legend Musical, another project I’m eagerly looking forward to. It feels like we’re on the edge of a new wave of musicals that will completely redefine how stories are told on stage.

Sitting with EPIC feels like stepping directly into that childhood fantasy of mine. The songs aren’t just background—they’re characters, voices, and emotions all on their own. The layering of motifs gives the story a richness that makes every scene resonate on multiple levels, so you’re not just watching a story—you’re inside it.

That’s why EPIC The Musical isn’t just my favorite—it’s proof of what happens when music and storytelling become inseparable. It doesn’t just tell a tale; it turns that tale into a symphony of emotions, a reminder that music has always been the purest language of the human experience.

Shout out to you, Jorge Rivera-Herrans, for this amazing masterpiece
